Final Stop: The Sand Dunes

The final stop on our Colorado road trip was the Great Sand Dunes National Park just north of Alamosa. We camped just a little west of the dunes the night before at San Luis Lake, then headed over in the morning. They are the tallest dunes in North America, sandwiched between the Sangre de Cristo mountain range and the San Juans. The tallest dune is 750 feet tall. For more information, check this site out: http://www.nps.gov/grsa/naturescience/sanddunes.htm.
The little speck in this picture is Greg hiking up the dune.
And here he is zoomed in. These dunes are enormous!
Lots of people (including us) were trying to sled down the dunes. It was pretty tricky. It helped if you had a narrow, toboggan-esque sled and weighed less than 100 pounds.
I loved all the curves and lines in the sand. It was like God's little zen garden.
We didn't get to play very long because it was so dang hot, but Claire enjoyed the sand while we were there. It was the softest sand I've ever felt in Colorado. And if you stuck your hand a few inches down, it was really cool. We took turns burying each other's feet and hands. So much fun!

We had such a good time on this trip. Next up: Iowa!
