Next on our road trip was a trip to the Royal Gorge in Canon City. We had a wonderful time visiting our friends, The Birds, and then spent the next day exploring this great tourist attraction.
Ahh, suspension bridges. This one is 956 feet above the canyon floor and is a quarter mile across. It was built in 1929 using 2,100 strands of No.9 galvanized wire in each cable. It will support in excess of two million pounds.
This is the tram as seen from the bride. Of course we rode it!
At the bottom of the canyon runs the Arkansas River. It is running quite high this year, and was fascinating to watch. Here is the Royal Gorge scenic train. Greg really wanted to, but we did not ride it.
On the far side of the bridge was a "wildlife park". Here is a very cool white bison.
And a giant elk.
We definitely picked the right direction to ride, because it was the three of us plus one other couple in the tram, so we had lots of room.
And the view was nothing short of spectacular.
Then we had a really, really long wait for the incline railway. Luckily, there were some interesting photo subjects to try to capture.

We loved watching the Arkansas speed on by.
